redback.utils.bandpass_flux_to_flux_density

redback.utils.bandpass_flux_to_flux_density(flux, flux_err, delta_nu)[source]

Convert an integrated flux (and its error) measured over a bandpass in erg/s/cm² into a flux density (in erg/s/cm²/Hz) and then into millijanskys (mJy).

Parameters:
  • flux (float or numpy.ndarray) – Integrated flux in erg/s/cm².

  • flux_err (float or numpy.ndarray) – Error in the integrated flux in erg/s/cm².

  • delta_nu (float) – Effective bandwidth of the filter in Hz.

Returns:

  • f_nu_mJy (float or numpy.ndarray) – Flux density converted to millijanskys (mJy).

  • f_nu_err_mJy (float or numpy.ndarray) – Error in the flux density in mJy.

Notes

The conversion from integrated flux F (erg/s/cm²) to flux density f_nu (erg/s/cm²/Hz) assumes a known effective bandwidth Δν in Hz:

f_nu = F / Δν

Then, converting to mJy is done using the relation 1 mJy = 1e-3 Jy = 1e-3 * 1e-23 erg/s/cm²/Hz = 1e-26 erg/s/cm²/Hz. Therefore, to convert erg/s/cm²/Hz into mJy, divide by 1e-26.
